Story

The most eligible male elephant bachelor around the project 😉 Hen is our only male and just a big lazy charmer. First visiting us in 2013 – 2014 for about 8 months he had many admirers with the ladies. Just as he began to settle in he was unfortunately taken back to work by his owners.

After further negotiations his owners finally agreed to retire him at EVP and we held a raffle to raise the funds for his rescue from logging! Thanks to our amazing supporters we were able to attain the funds and one lucky raffle winner came out to the EVP to visit the big man himself!

When Hen returned to us he unfortunately had his remaining tusks sawn off and sold (his other tusk was damaged as an adolescent) and he is now characterized by his half tusk. Hen now spends his days relaxing and grazing about his own area of the valley, as he walks the furthest of all the elephants.

Hen is not often seen by day visitors but week long volunteers usually get the awesome opportunity to hike out and visit him.

Due to the sometimes more aggressive nature of bull elephants Hen has two highly trained mahouts and one of which constantly rides him on his head and acts as a sort of distraction and safety blanket. However most of the time he is just the most laid back gentle giant there ever could be.

Come for a visit and say hello to him yourself!
