    We are currently looking for a new local Director, to come and work with our local and international staff, guests and volunteers. Come and join the ELIE & EVP family!

    ELIE’s main aim is to care for the captive elephant population in Cambodia and support the communities that work with them. We run a number of projects such as forest conservation, a land titling project, veterinary care and research projects, community health care and school support scheme all based around the goal to support the elephants, their owners and the forest that they need to live. The Elephant Valley Project (EVP) was launched as an elephant sanctuary developed to create a home for injured and old elephants and is now ELIE’s centrepiece for elephant conservation. ELIE is unique in terms of its primary source of funding comes from income from local and international visitors who come to EVP. Since 2006 the NGO has evolved and grown, with the development of EVP as an award winning tourist attraction, providing a financing mechanism for funding all ELIE programs. We now have 51 staff including 43 local Bunong employees, 5 Khmer nationals and 3 Foreign staff who work alongside the local staff to support and build the capacity of the project teams.

    This role will focus on the NGO management, internal procedures and being the local face of the NGO. To help us continue to support the elephants of Cambodia and the local indigenous community, we need a dynamic individual to work closely with the Deputy Director and local staff to continue the unique programs we have developed. This varied role will allow your passion for environmental conservation, community development and ecotourism to create new ideas, helping to expand not only the EVP, but ELIE as well.

    ELIEs office based in the town of Sen Monorom, and the EVP is in Putrom Community 12km from the Sen Monorom. The work will be based primarily at the office with some meetings in the community and at the forest sanctuary site.

    You will receive a local salary. An initial commitment of 12 months is required. We are looking for someone to ASAP.

  • Responsibilities

    Management

    • Advise on the process and policies of ELIE and work to achieve the established goals and targets of the organisation.
    • Be responsible for the general affairs and government relationships of the organization
    • Be the NGO representative signatory on all contracts and official documents
    • Work closely with the Deputy Director to oversee the management of ELIE personnel and program activities. Assist in capacity building of the program and project staff.
    • Participate in meetings and conferences of ELIE

    Finance

    • Work closely with the Deputy Director to develop the annual budget and its 6 month revision as well as overseeing program and project expenses.
    • Be responsible to approve all requests for advance and requests for expense for all programs, for core and exponential budget items, and check and sign all bank deposits, withdrawals and transfers.
    • Engage in fundraising to support the day to day activities of the organisation

    Program Planning and Reporting

    • Prepare monthly government reports and Annual Reports for all programs.
    • Work closely with the Deputy Director for the operational and strategic planning of ELIE.
    • Work closely with the Deputy Director to plan future projects, develop budgets and implement activities of ELIE.
    • Work closely with the Deputy Director to prepare reports to ELIE donors

    This position is for someone who has a strong interest in supporting Cambodia’s remaining elephants, local communities and conservation!

  • Experience

    Essential

    • 5 years’ experience working in program management or small NGO management, with at least 3 years’ experience in high level managerial role
    • Excellent leadership and team management skills
    • Outstanding communication and cultural sensitivity skills, experience working with people from many different backgrounds
    • Strong financial understanding, budget planning and reporting experience
    • Familiarity with Cambodian law and ability to translate into internal policies
    • Experience working with both government and with local communities
    • Effective problem-solving skills and adaptability
    • Public speaking, ability to give presentations on the organization
    • Proficient in Microsoft programs and working online
    • High level of English

    Preferable

    • Experience on an ecotourism project, with international guests or something similar
    • Current driving License (manual trans)
