Story
Darling, also known by her Khmer name “Bong Kong” (meaning “Crayfish”), is a graceful and nurturing older elephant with a calm, wise demeanor. She has spent her entire life paired with Doe in a traditional Bunong village in Memong, where they worked under the careful stewardship of their elderly owner, a man who dedicated his life to their wellbeing until losing his eyesight years earlier.
Darling played a vital role in the community for decades, participating in forest work, helping transport goods, and even serving as a ceremonial elephant on special occasions. As the family aged and younger generations moved away from these traditions, Darling and Doe were reluctantly put to work in logging and tourism. Despite the hardships, Darling remained resilient, always looking out for her big protector and companion, Doe.
In 2012 and 2017, the elephants were brought to EVP for rest and recovery. Both times, Darling settled in quickly, thriving in the forest and demonstrating natural elephant behaviors with ease. She is especially known for her love of bathing and for being a source of emotional support for Doe.
In 2021, Darling’s future was placed in jeopardy when both she and Doe were nearly taken by somethy they were working for aiming to steal them from the owners and sell them into tourism. Thanks to a rapid intervention by EVP and generous community support, the elephants were recovered and returned to safety. Their owners, recognizing the sanctuary as the best place for them, entered into a five-year agreement allowing them to return to the EVP under our care.
Now in her golden years, Darling continues to flourish in the sanctuary’s forested hills, enjoying long walks, peaceful baths, and a life free from labor. Her gentle leadership remains essential to her bestie Doe and reminds us all of the strength found in quiet companionship.
Come for a visit and say hello to her yourself!
